Status of Children in india
Child labour is a universal problem.
However in India not all children
are treated equally and many millions
face asymmetric opportunities for
survival and development. Among
the groups of the disadvantaged
children are for instance the tribal
children who belong to socially
and economically backward community.
Basic Rights of Children
Right to survival.
Right to protection.
Right to development.
Right to education.
Every child out of school no matter
what the reason might be is a child,
whose fundamental rights have been
violated. Blaming the parents and
employers for this unjust done to
the child is not enough because
it is the society at large that
creates the condition and environment
which favour the child labour.
The causes of persistence of child
labour in India are many and are
inter related. Generally it may
be said that children are compelled
to work because of their poor socio-economic
conditions. They include poverty
and unemployment, the vested interests
of employers, the inadequate educational
system and a lack of awareness among
parents and society and improper
implication of programmes of health
and development for the child labour.
The causes of child labour
are inter related
Economic reasons.
Educational backwardness and ignorance
of parents
Absence of provision of compulsory
education
Employers preference for engaging
children for work
Victims of misfortune
Large families
In efficiency of protective legislation
for working children
Combating child labour
There are two approaches
for combating child labour
Traditional approach
New approach
Traditional approach emphasizes
on legislation and enforcement
The new approach is comprehensive
and pragmatic. In this approach
both Govt. and NGO should involve.
